Balance – Forget it, here is what life is about…

Devin Hibbard – Balance – Forget about achieving balance, here is what life is about…

I think the idea of balance is a disservice to working women. I don’t think there is such a thing as balance.

I just read something from an editor of one of the fashion magazines, and she said, it’s not about balance, it’s about prioritization. She said, all of my house plants have died. I never have dinner parties, and what I do is I sit with my kids and I go to work. And those are the two things that I’ve chosen to do.

And that was refreshing because the idea that you can have it all is not true, and so to some extent, that perpetuates the idea that there is some magical balance out there—there is no balance. I mean, my life is crazy all the time. I’m constantly running around, trying to be a good CEO and lead a company, and be a good mom, and a good wife, and those are my three priorities, and then you know, friends, friendships, and personal time. Those things all fall to number two. And I try to do some of those when I really need them.

But, I think that the idea that you can have it all—you can’t have it all, you just can’t. It doesn’t exist. And it doesn’t exist for men either. Men have much less pressure in many cases to be at home, and they miss out on the incredible relationships with their kids. So I don’t think that that is a balance either. I think it’s again, priorities. So I try to just keep my eye, but it’s not easy. I always feel guilty if I’m doing one thing more or less.

I think that as a women focused organization, though, with women in Uganda that we work with, and mostly women staff, we try to focus a little bit more on going home at the end of the day. Recognizing that people have lives outside of work, that you can just work somebody 20 hours a day, because at the end of the day, you don’t get real value back. So maybe that makes it a little easier, I don’t know. I don’t think I have a very good answer.
